Political scientist explained why Germany does not dare to lift sanctions against the Russian Federation

It is now easier for the German authorities to prolong sanctions against Russia than to abandon them, said political analyst Vladimir Shapovalov. He stated this on June 30 to a news agency correspondent, commenting on the fact that the EU Council extended sanctions against the Russian Federation. Naturally, in the future, advances are possible. What factors can influence such changes? First of all, this is a further aggravation of US-German relations if the sanctions war between America and Germany begins due to Nord Stream 2 and, in parallel with this, the process of German military-political divorce from the United States, as was the case with France during the time of Charles de Gaulle. But the likelihood of this is not too high. There are also domestic political circumstances (in the USA and in Germany) that work against the lifting of sanctions, and not for lifting, Shapovalov said. These include the imminent departure of Angela Merkel and the arrival of the next, more pro-American politician. In the United States, Biden's arrival and partial easing of US-German contradictions are possible. In such a situation, as Shapovalov explained, the issue of lifting the sanctions regime will become even more problematic. Recall, as the news agency reported, earlier Shapovalov explained that, extending the sanctions against the Russian Federation, the EU confirmed its loyalty to the United States.
